A woman came to one of my workshops last year, first time ever on the mat, deep into a round of kicks and strikes. Her arms were shaking. Her breathing was ragged. Every part of her wanted to stop.

Crowned by Fire is our in-person self-defense and confidence workshop, pop-up style, about once a month. Small groups, hands-on training. Some sessions include SIRT pistol basics with trainers we bring in, for the women who want that piece too.

Honestly, I almost talked myself out of coming. I'd never taken a self-defense class in my life and had no idea what to expect. But from the second I walked in, I felt welcomed. Not judged, not pressured. The instructors broke everything down and let us move at our own pace. I left knowing moves I could actually use, but more than that, I left feeling more confident in myself. It actually was a lot of fun too.
This was so much more than a self-defense workshop. I learned to actually pay attention to what's around me, trust what my body's telling me, and respond instead of freezing up. It felt real without making me feel scared the whole time. And being in a room full of Black women learning to protect ourselves together? That made it hit different.
I came in expecting to learn a few physical moves. I left with a whole different mindset. Protecting myself isn't just physical, it's setting boundaries, using my voice, catching danger sooner, and actually believing my safety matters. This workshop pushed me, encouraged me, and reminded me I'm stronger than I sometimes give myself credit for.

Me, Tanja Owens. I'm a certified self-defense instructor and Krav Maga practitioner. I built Crowned by Fire because I wanted training that actually understood who Black women are and what we're carrying.

Part of it is hands-on firearm familiarity using safe training pistols, no live ammunition, ever. You'll learn how to hold, draw from concealment, and protect yourself if a weapon's ever near you.
